Ryan Russell

Thanks to a dear friend of mine and the purchase of her new digital camera, I realized I need to feature more photographers. Today I present Ryan Russell. I consider Russell a really cool guy and would take his place for a day. Russell hails from Birmingham, Alabama. The bulk of his work is shooting for his favorite bands. Not only does he photograph their performances, he has access to backstage areas, green rooms and even travels with the musicians, snapping away. He also takes candid and posed pictures of the band members. In his portfolio, Russell explores great city landscapes as well.

Russell mainly uses film, which I admire, with Canon and Lomography equipment. From interviews I found, Russell seems too humble to name drop the bands he’s worked with, so, I’ll do it for him. He’s photographed Haste, Taking Back Sunday, Mastodon, Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, Tegan and Sara, Death Cab For Cutie, and many more. His work with Haste actually started his career and he only works with musicians he enjoys and respect his work.  Here are some of my favorite images from this great photographer.

– Maylene & the Sons of Disaster, 2007 –

– NYC, 2007 –

– Adam Lazzara of Taking Back Sunday, 2006 –

– Brent Hinds of Mastodon, 2006/Peter Karvonen of Faithskatesupply, 2003 –

– 2005 –

– Pelican, 2007 / Taking Back Sunday, 2007 –

– 2004 –

– Every Time I Die, 2007 –

– 2005 –

– Taking Back Sunday (Backstage), 2006 –

It’s clear form Russell’s credentials, he mainly sticks to shooting rock bands, though he has admitted he would like to shoot musicians such as Jay-Z and Kanye West. Another great project to check out is his site Nervous Energies. There, he films live performances, away from the stage, majority are acoustic sessions. As of now, he’s uploaded over 150 videos of great footage. Below is my favorite!

Impressed? I am and can’t wait to see more from Ryan Russell.  Make sure to check out his website and Nervous Energies. Enjoy and be inspired.
