Poem : Not So Sweet

i never thought a mere compliment
being called sweet
would uncover so much frustration
and cause relentless doubt

i can’t bear the word anymore

it hasn’t gotten me far in this world
it doesn’t earn much respect or care
it only diminishes who i really am
and who i want to be

that compliment is an omen
there will be hardship
and heartbreak
i’ll be laughed at
and become untouchable
i’ll be forgotten

i never want to hear that word again

sweet
never again
sugar can cut just the same
